According to Variety, Duncan Sheik (Spring Awakening) has been tapped to write 80s-style music and lyrics for an adaptation of the book and film, American Psycho, alongside librettist Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.
No cast or creatives have yet been announced, as the project is still in its infancy and Sheik is still busy preparing Whisper House for Broadway, but the project is already generating a lot of excitement…

this is extremely interesting to me. it’s always exciting to see the bounds of what can happen in musical theater expand and explode. and i can definitely get on board with duncan sheik writing the music for this. makes sense that he might be interested in something different like this too after Spring Awakening. there’s an audience for this kind of thing, especially for those looking to walk the edgier and blurrier lines of musical theater.
I love the weird, dark humor of the movie (sorry to say I haven’t yet read the novel), and I’d totally see this on Broadway. I’m a little skeptical of whether a musical version (with 80s-style music, no less) can really capture the more gruesome and brooding aspects of the story, but I’d be willing to give it a go!
