
The reviews for Sunday in the Park With George are in, and the critics are in admiration of this re-imagined masterpiece. When you bring this timeless and universally revered musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine to life with beautiful, imaginative direction by another Lapine, director Sarna Lapine, and pinpoint performances from stars like Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford, it’s awfully hard to wind up with a dud. And that’s just the case here. Gyllenhaal’s George is the most captivating since Mandy Patinkin’s in the 1984 original production, and director Lapine even manages to make the musical’s challenging second act a highlight. Take a breather from the real world, where the arts are under attack, and view the world as George sees it. It’s a true work of art.
