They’re finally here!
The 2019 Tony nominations are in with Hadestown leading the pack with 14 total nominations, followed by Ain’t Too Proud and Tootsie with 12 and 11, respectively. Beetlejuice, which has been snubbed by most of the other awards, got 8 nominations, including that for Best Musical, and the critically-acclaimed production of The Prom also got the Best Musical nod (along with 6 others).
The Best Revival of a Musical contest will come down to the Tony voters’ preference for a innovation, as both Kiss Me, Kate and Oklahoma! have gotten great notices and fan praise. Will the classic revival done right or the creative production that turned the show into something that feels new take home the coveted prize.
The biggest snubs on the musical front this year were for Head Over Heels, which didn’t receive a single nomination, and The Cher Show, which only got 3 total nominations, though many thought it was in the running for Best Musical. Also snubbed pretty throughally was Be More Chill, one of the biggest fan favorites of the year, which only received one nomination.
But…we couldn’t be more excited looking at all of this year’s nominees and hope you’ll join us on June 9 as for our live coverage from the red carpet and awards! Happy awards season!!!
