The reviews for Hello, Dolly! are in, and Broadway loves Bette! In the middle of a brassy, bouncy, in-your-face-like-it’s-the-golden-age-of-musicals musical, there stands the incomparable Bette Midler performing her take on the famed matchmaker Dolly Levi. Calculated comedy is the name of the game here, and Bette plays it better than anyone. She’s smart, sharp, and full of personality. But who’s really surprised…she’s Bette Midler after all. A little surprising may be David Hyde Pierce’s Horace Vandergelder, a “delightful curmudgeon” in this production – and all the more endearing for the saving of his almost-always-cut song “Penny in My Pocket” at the start of Act 2. The show may be BIG (to some TOO BIG) but this revival is a triumph. Do yourself a favor – book a night on Broadway with Bette.
