More nominations are in for the 2023 Awards Season. The Drama Desk Awards announced their set of nominees today, which included the following Broadway musicals:
- & Juliet (2 nominations)
- Almost Famous (3 nominations)
- A Beautiful Noise (3 nominations)
- Camelot (4 nominations)
- Bob Fosse’s Dancin’ (1 nomination)
- Into the Woods (6 nominations)
- KPOP (2 nominations)
- New York, New York (6 nominations)
- Parade (4 nominations)
- Shucked (12 nominations)
- Some Like it Hot (8 nominations)
- Sweeney Todd (4 nominations)
(As was the case for the Outer Critic Circle Awards, the Off-Broadway production of Merrily We Roll Along that’s headed to Broadway also received nods (5 nominations), and Kimberly Akimbo was only considered for its new contributions.)
Like the OCC Awards the Drama Desk Awards also reworked the gendering of their performance categories to be all-inclusive. However, unlike the OCC Awards, the Drama Desk Awards doubled the number of nominees included in these performance categories instead of breaking them out by on- and off-Broadway distinctions.
KPOP and Almost Famous finally got a little love, leaving Bad Cinderella as the only fully snubbed Broadway musical of the season thus far. On the other end of the spectrum, Shucked, New York, New York and Some Like it Hot are all cleaning up nominations across the board (currently sitting a totals of 22, 22 and 21 each).
Tony Awards, Theatre World Awards, The Pulitzer Prize and The Chita Rivera Awards are still on deck for announcements though…so it’s still anybody’s game.
The Drama Desk Awards will take place June 6, 2023, and we’ll post the winners to the blog here live as they’re announced.
